Berlant Oil Bath Filter'tron.
The Filter’Tron was invented in 1957 by Ray Butts, an electronics engineer and amplifier designer, in collaboration with Chet Atkins. The name “Filter’Tron” comes from its design goal: to filter out the electrical hum.
Compared to Gibson PAFs, Filter’Trons had: Lower output (typically ~4k–5k ohms vs 7k–9k for PAFs). Narrower bobbins, placed closer together. Wider magnetic field, thanks to a bar magnet under the coils and adjustable pole screws. These differences gave them a brighter, clearer, more “twangy” sound, often described as “chime with body.”
Filter’Trons defined the sound of Chet Atkins, Duane Eddy, and Eddie Cochran in the late 1950s
